The Portraits of Changemakers series highlights the inspiring individuals at Aeromag who, every day, actively contribute to change through their commitment and vision. Among them, Marissa Levers, Deicing Technician at our Vancouver station (YVR), in British Columbia.
Marissa completed her first deicing season with Aeromag last winter. As a commercial pilot and flight instructor, she was drawn to the unique nature of the role and the opportunity to work closely with commercial aircraft. She finds the work especially rewarding, knowing she plays an important role in helping passengers reach their destinations safely by ensuring aircraft are free of contamination and ready to fly.
“I’m proud to contribute to Aeromag’s high operational standards by prioritizing safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement. I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself, learn from experienced team members, and strengthen my skills.”
Her first deicing season was quieter than expected due to the warm weather in Vancouver, which meant much of her initial training focused on simulations rather than live operations. With the support and guidance of the supervisors and trainers, she was able to learn efficiently and build a strong foundation. This also gave her the opportunity to explore different types of trucks and get a better understanding of various aspects of the deicing operations.
Marissa’s advice to deicing technicians preparing for their first season is to ask questions and make the most of the resources available to them. By learning from experienced colleagues, they can gain a better understanding of the operations, benefit from real-life experiences, and feel more prepared to handle situations they have not yet experienced firsthand in the field.
Curious, open-minded, and eager to improve, Marissa is focused on gaining more live-spray experience during the next season. Passionate about both deicing and teaching, she hopes to support training and share what she has learned with new hires. She also looks forward to exploring new roles in the control tower and in training to continue her development throughout the season.
