The Portraits of Changemakers series focuses on visionary individuals who work at Aeromag and who, every day, demonstrate a willingness to make a difference in the world. Among them, Rob Mathews, General Manager at our Manchester (MAN) station in the United Kingdom.
Rob has been part of the Aeromag family for almost five years. He is responsible for managing the Manchester team and overseeing deicing operations. Recently, his team started a new project to stay busy during the summer months: washing the exterior of aircraft.
For several years, Rob had explored the possibility of offering an aircraft washing service, but no opportunity had arisen. After several discussions with Jet2 to offer them this new service, the contract was secured in 2025. Rob and his MAN team then developed the necessary policies, procedures, and training to support the new service.
For Aeromag, this new service certainly represents an increase in revenue, but beyond that, it also supports employee retention by keeping staff engaged during the summer months. It’s an advantage for both the team and the customers, as it ensures more experienced and better-trained employees. The service also meets maintenance requirements set by manufacturers, notably by helping to detect potential leaks. Additionally, it plays a key role in the brand image: a clean, shiny aircraft leaves a positive impression on passengers. Moreover, cleanliness affects aircraft performance, as dirt buildup can increase fuel consumption by up to 2%. Therefore, keeping an aircraft clean is not just about appearance, but also about efficiency and safety.
This kind of initiative makes Rob especially proud to work with his team. He says he is moved by the progress and growth of the staff working at MAN.
