At Aeromag, the role of operational support is crucial in ensuring the seamless execution of the company’s day-to-day operations, particularly in preparing for and managing the demands of each season.
Nuno Santos, Operations Support Coordinator, has been part of the Aeromag family for 11 years. He occupied several roles throughout the years, such as Deicing Technician, Bay Lead, Practical Trainer, Head Trainer and more. His main responsibility is to support the various stations at the operational level. In the summer, he shifts from overseeing operations and managing weather events during the winter to assisting the stations in preparing for the upcoming season. This involves ensuring that several projects and tasks are completed before the start of the next season. Additionally, Nuno undergoes recertification with the customer airlines to train and pass on his knowledge to both new and returning technicians.
“It’s inspiring to be part of a group of talented and driven individuals who work together to create solutions that truly impact our field. The sense of purpose, coupled with a focus on continuous improvement and safety, makes being part of this team both meaningful and exciting.”
The Operations Support department plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of the operations. It provides essential resources, training, and guidance to various operational teams, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to execute their tasks effectively. This support includes training both initial and recurrent technicians in theory and practical skills, training local practical trainers, and supplying tools to local managers.
The department is also responsible for all aspects related to the Go Team, a group of trained employees called upon to provide backup at various stations in need. The department plays a critical role in identifying, early in the season, which technicians wish to join the Go Team. They ensure that these technicians are compliant with all the airlines they will be deicing for at each station before deployment. Additionally, they ensure the members complete station familiarization prior to arrival and undergo another session once they reach their designated station.
Despite careful planning and preparation, unforeseen challenges often arise throughout the winter, whether due to unpredictable weather or obstacles beyond control at a particular station. There were instances when several weather events hit multiple stations simultaneously, making it challenging to ensure each station had adequate coverage with their own technicians or Go Team members. However, through effective communication and collaboration with all departments and stations, we were able to develop a proactive plan, ensuring that each station was prepared and staffed appropriately to handle the upcoming events.
Let’s go further together.
